As usual decided to dig in and do a little research on this and found an article that was written by Kyle Porter of CBS Sports a few years ago regarding this very subject;

QUOTE: "The top 25 drivers (as measured by strokes gained off the tee) have earned over $35 million this year while the top 25 putters (as measured by strokes gained putting) have earned $25 million. A good amount but not nearly as much as the biggest hitters."

For the guys who make a living doing this, I'm sure they would say the driver. Like life, as I always say, it is about choices. Hakuna matata.

Distance is not ALWAYS the answer. Accuracy off the tee wins tournaments. PM was so long off the tee for so many years but you never knew which zip code his ball was going to. He never really mastered and managed his tee game, I think he could have better, which would have enabled him winning more tournaments. His length was his nemesis. Granted he won his share, but left a lot on the course.

I'll take better putting all day long.

I say driving. When I hit it in the short grass off the tee I become a better putter because I usually hit the ball closer to the hole on my approach shots. Who cares if I nail a 15 footer for double on that par 4. It’s a double because I drove it OB or behind a tree off the tee. Drive it in the fairway and I could have 2 putted for par.

Jordan's driver didn't make 9 birdies on Sunday at Augusta, his putter did. Still, nobody hits it better than Rory, I've stood right behind him, 8-10' away, little guy can move it!

This is such a common discussion and my take on it is that for every club golfer, you need all 3 facets of the game to be on point to score well. You can't score if you don't get off the tee. You then need a good solid approach to get on the green in regulation, and you need to putt well to score. You can be the best putter in the club but if you don't get on the green quick enough, it doesn't matter. Equally, I know 16 handicappers who driver 260 but only 1 in 4 go on the fairway so they can't score well.

I am going to say driving. I don't think there is a right answer here. It's personal view. Here is my thought process. Bigger, more well known events place a premium on finding the fairway. Look at the majors. Colin Morikawa, won the PGA off of great driving, even driving the 16th to set up an eagle and he won the Open in similar fashion. He is known on tour as an average putter but when he putts well for a week, he wins.

Look at all the good drivers right now, JT, Scottie, Rory, Jon, Max, Will Z., if they are driving it well, they will generally put themselves with a chance on Sunday. Look at Scottie at Memorial last week. Guy did not make a putt outside of 10 feet all week and finished third.

Give me the ability to split the fairway 320 plus every time and I will hit enough of them close to shoot decent scores. Nowadays, par 4's on tour are 500 plus yards. Do you want 170 or less in or 230 plus for a second shot? Over time you are going to hit it closer from 170 in than 230 out?

Paul Casey said even the worst putters on tour are really really good putters.
Putting is what separates the Tour pros from the average Joes.
